Developing Your Child’s Skills During the Summer

summer learning for kidsIt isn’t uncommon for kids to flip the learning switch off as soon as school lets out for summer vacation. However, even after the last bell of the school year has rung, your child can continue to develop and learn. Summer learning programs can be an extremely helpful tool to help kids with learning and attention issues. At Rice Psychology Group, we have the information you need to keep your child one step ahead of the game.

Extended School Year

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, your child may be eligible for an Extended School Year (ESY) if he/she is part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This program is optional but generally offers services available after a regular school day. An ESY program varies depending on what a school deems appropriate for its student’s needs. Some examples of the ESY services include morning-only social skills programs, speech therapy skills classes and reading skills sessions.

Traditional Summer School

Although varying depending on the district, many schools offer summer classes as part of the general education curriculum. Schools can offer services ranging from sessions that focus on helping children develop their skills to sessions that help students retain them. Summer classes can be mandatory for many students who need academic help and can also be a good alternative for children who don’t have an IEP for help with their skills.

Programs for Learning and Enrichment

It’s important to remember that schools aren’t the only ones that offer development programs. Many organizations will often offer classes and sessions designed to focus on your child’s interests. Zoos can potentially introduce an animal-loving child to zoology and local art schools can focus on children who love art. The following organizations will often offer summer programs for your child:

  • YMCA or other community groups
  • Museums
  • Zoos
  • Planetariums
  • Performing arts organizations
