Kids today seem to have it all. The world is literally at their fingertips. While it seems that the up-and-coming generation has more resources and opportunity than ever before, they are struggling the most. Why is that, and what can we do about it?
Rice Psychology Group understands that while each generation has their own specific benefits, they also struggle with very specific mental and emotional obstacles that others before them did not. That’s why we are proud to offer help and support for kids and teens growing up in today’s world, specifically Generation Z.
Who is Generation Z?
According to an article by pewresearch.org, Generation Z, or Gen Z, is comprised of those who were born between the years of 1997 – 2012. Gen Z is more racially and ethnically diverse than previous generations. They are on track to be the best-educated generation, and they tend to see the good in change, specifically within societal, family, and gender identity ideas. They have the most access to technology which provides them with the most opportunities to connect to others around the world.
So then, why are we seeing growing numbers of this generation complain about loneliness, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts? Is it the world they’re living in? Is it due to the fact that they are the more likely to discuss their mental health? Or is it all in their head? (No pun intended.)
What’s Ailing Gen Z?
If you are a member of Gen Z, then you know all too well that while you have some of the greatest opportunities before you, you are faced with some of the greatest challenges in your future. Just a few short years ago, everything looked incredibly different for you and then March 2020 happened and things changed.
- Covid-19
- Social and political issues
- Social media – specifically bullying, the isolation it causes, its’ all-consuming nature, and the low self-esteem that can result
- The spread of misinformation
- Gun violence
- Debt – specifically college and educational costs
- Lack of face-to-face contact
We could easily list several other important issues that you are facing. However, we want to instead let you know that while yes, these may seem overwhelming and almost impossible to deal with, there are ways you can manage your feelings of anxiety or depression and our licensed psychologists in Tampa can help.
Your Needs Are Unique
No two people are the same, which is something Rice Psychology Group fully understands. There may be some days when you want a guide to help you navigate through the choices you have to make. On other days, you may just want someone to listen to what you’re going through. We offer a place here you can relax and speak freely without judgmental feedback.
We’re here to listen to anything you may want to discuss, whether it’s about your feelings, thoughts, relationships, stress, society, or career. If you are hesitant about giving therapy a try, here are a few ways you can improve your mental wellbeing until you’re ready to talk:
- Try to relax and eliminate stress, even if for a few minutes
- Put down your phone, turn off social media, and turn the TV off
- Connect with others face-to-face
- Spend time outdoors
