Over the past several years, we’ve seen an increasing number of children and teens who believe that the gender they were assigned at birth is not their correct one. As a result, many go on to transition from female to male or vice versa.
Truth be told, this has been a learning process for our therapists, alongside the families we treat.
To help us become more knowledgeable about LGBTQ issues, we’ve pursued additional training and consultation with other professionals to best support parents and kids through this process.
We know that acceptance by parents can be challenging, but it’s an extremely critical and protective factor for youth who are transitioning. There is a devastatingly high risk of depression and suicide in transgender teens, and our first goal is always to ensure our patients’ safety.
Tammy Plunkett
I’d like to talk to you about my dear friend, Tammy Plunkett. Tammy and I have spent a week together with a group of other entrepreneurs during the past two Januarys working on our respective businesses. Tammy is a writer and writing coach with a warmth that is irresistible and inspirational. I have been wanting to share her insight about her son, Mitchell, who transitioned from female to male.
She recently wrote an eye-opening article about the experience that I feel everyone, especially parents, needs to read.
