Tampa Anxiety Psychologists
Chances are you’ve experienced anxiety at some point in life. Maybe you felt anxious when it was your turn to present a project in science class or felt nervous when facing a challenging task at work. Anxiety disorders, however, are entirely different and can be so serious that leading a normal life can often be very difficult. The Tampa anxiety psychologists of Rice Psychology Group want to help you understand the basics of anxiety and phobias, which can often be the first step in dealing with them.

Recognizing the Disorders

Anxiety disorders are generally categorized as serious mental illnesses that can often bring continuous and overpowering feelings of fear and worry. Four of the most recognizable types of anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder – This disorder consists of extreme and dubious feelings of concern and tension that can often arise with almost no provocation.
  • Social anxiety disorder – Often caused by a fear of being judged or ridiculed, this type of anxiety disorder surfaces during social situations and causes overpowering worry and self-consciousness.
  • Panic disorder – This type of disorder is characterized by a sudden and overwhelming feeling of fear and terror. Symptoms can include sweating, palpitations and choking sensations.
  • Phobias – A phobia causes aggressive feelings of fear as a result of a specific thing or setting such as bugs, heights or bodies of water. They can often be unsuitable in a situation and can lead to a constant avoidance of common circumstances.

Know the Signs

While a direct cause of anxiety disorders has not been identified, researchers and field experts generally recognize that these mental issues arise as a result of several factors. They can often include stress-inducing environments and brain changes. While symptoms vary depending on the anxiety disorder, they generally include:

  • Uncontrollable thoughts/worry
  • Dizziness
  • Tense muscles
  • Fear, panic and restlessness
  • Trouble getting sleep
  • Shortness of breath
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Cold or sweaty hands or feet
  • Being unable to remain calm or still
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Heart palpitations
