May is the Month for Mental Health Awareness

In the past, mental health issues appeared to have a less-than-helpful stigma surrounding them. Now, the support and acceptance of mental health topics have grown exponentially. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and serves to raise consciousness for mental illnesses and other associated issues. While it was in 2013 that President Obama officially named May as National Mental Health Awareness Month, the support for this issue has existed for decades.

A Long History of Support

mentalAwarenessMonth
Millions of Americans face the reality of mental health issues each year and it was in the late 1940s when the first designated week for cognizance of this issue was established. In the 1960s, the annual, weeklong campaign was upgraded to a month-long movement that focused on battling the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

National Health Awareness Month generally consists of a number of themed activities organized by National Health America, the event’s main sponsor. The theme for 2010 was “Live Your Life Well” and focused on helping people take a stand for the prevention of mental health issues during personal trials or stressful periods. There are other additional campaigns and activities that complement the month-long event. These include:

  • National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
  • Blogging for Mental Health
  • Help for People Seeking Psychological Services
